Guernsey Dialysis Unit

The renal unit, located at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital in Guernsey, is a 5-bedded sub unit operated by Guy’s and St Thomas in London. A new 6-bedded unit is currently in the planning stages and is due for completion in 2005.

The current unit was opened in September 1998 with funds from the British Kidney patient’s association following lengthy campaigning by patients and relatives who had previously had to travel off island in order to receive their dialysis treatment. In April 2004, the Guernsey Board of Health employed Guy’s and St Thomas NHS to manage renal services on the island. We offer care and support to 60+ patients with renal disease who have been referred to Dr Ian Abbs.

To help time pass quickly while on haemodialysis patients are provided with their own television and portable C.D player, individual headphones are available so as to not disturb any of the other patients. We also have a DVD and video player with a range of movies available. Patients can bring in their own movies if they wish.

National and local papers are delivered for ‘in-house’ reading as long as the weather is good and the planes can land!! The hospital shop visits daily with various magazines, refreshments and personal items for sale.

We offer fresh croissants or scones, Colombian filter coffee as well as tea and biscuits for morning or afternoon tea.

The unit is easily accessible by car and parking is available outside the unit. There is a printable map available below which, when printed, points to our location within the hospital grounds. There is also a bus stop at the hospital entrance with a regular service to and from St Peter Port.
